Mint Plus Automatic Floor Cleaner 5200

opiThe Mint Plus 5200 floor cleaner is a sweeping and mopping unit designed for solid floor types like wood, tile, or linoleum. This unit does not employ the use of a vacuum; therefore, there is no noticeable noise emitted. This automatic floor cleaner makes use of dry cleaning cloth pads, as well as pre-moistened cloths to ensure floors are properly swept and mopped clean. Originally manufactured by Evolution Robotics, the company was acquired by iRobot on September 2012.

Included with the product are the following: a Pro Clean Reservoir Pad, a Multi-Purpose Cleaning Cloth, two dry sweeping, and two wet mopping microfiber pads. The Pro-Clean Reservoir Pads are designed so that this robotic cleaner is able to continually dispense liquid through the microfiber cloths throughout 350 square feet of mopping.

Either the Multi-Purpose Pad, or a dry sweeping pad may be used to effectively gather up dirt, debris, pet hair, and other small pieces of dirt. Meanwhile, the individual can then set the unit to “Mop mode” to allow the pre-moistened wet mopping cloth or the Multi-Purpose Clean Pad to thoroughly mop the hard surface floors.

The Pro-Clean Reservoir Pad and expanded cleaning space give the Mint Plus 5200 the ability to clean floors effectively; because the unit is square shaped, it’s able to get into corners easily as well. It makes use of the NorthStar Navigation System 2.0 in conjunction with Navigation Cubes. The individual may place the NorthStar cube in the areas of the home they’d like cleaned so the 5200 can use the cubes as a reference point for making its way around the rooms. Furthermore, its state-of-the-art navigation system also gives it the capability of analyzing where obstacles or drops are throughout the home, and registers them in the navigational map it creates.

The smart guidance system begins its cleaning regimen by moving in a routine back-and-forth fashion to mop floor surfaces in parallel lines. When the 5200 comes across sofa or kitchen table legs, stairs, or other obstacles in the way of its path, the system will determine whether or not to clean around the obstacle or to come back at a later time, before leaving the room.

For those who need to mop more than one room of their home, such as a large area, they can place two NorthStar Cubes on opposite sides of the home. This will allow the dry sweeping area to be increased by up to 2,000 square feet. The NorthStar Navigation System 2.0 will automatically form a map as it moves from one Cube to the other. People may also set the Mint Plus 5200 to Quick Mode; Quick Mode performs a quick open area cleaning, without detailing the entire floor space, and getting under furniture or tables. If needed, people may change the cleaning pad out on the unit while it’s in motion by pausing the bot’s operation. This is simply accomplished by either picking the unit up by the handles, or by pressing a control button on the unit itself.

In terms of the battery time, the Mint Plus 5200 is able to dry sweep for up to a whole four hours, while the unit is capable of wet mopping for up to two and a half hours at a time. On the same note, it can charge completely in four hours; however, the charging time can be decreased to two hours if you purchase the Turbo Charge Cradle separately.

This nifty machine is not without fault. Some people encounter problems with its navigation, sometimes going through an area over and over again. It’s important to place the Cube (which functions as the GPS guide) on a raised area and NOT on the floor, as this will ensure that it isn’t moved by the Mint while it is doing its job. Also, do not interrupt it while it’s cleaning as this can disrupt its pattern and it will have to recalculate and re-map the room, which mostly explains why the machine can sometimes be seen moving erratically or in circles.

It can be a bit slow in ‘Mop mode’ than in ‘Sweep mode’ and this is to be expected. Also, if you have a high ceiling, it shouldn’t be a problem as long as you position the Cube correctly. It should have a clear view and not blocked by shelves and cabinets, as this can affect the signal.

If you have a large house (over 2000 sq ft), it can take ages before the sweeping and the mopping gets done. I suggest you block off certain areas of your house and let the machine do the cleaning in blocks at a time, instead of letting it loose around the house.

Because the unit is able to get underneath furniture, coffee tables, chairs, and up against baseboards, it’s sure to accumulate lots of dirt and debris. All of the microfiber cloths which are included with the product are machine washable, so people can re-use the cloth. With no filters to change out, it is very easy to maintain. Along with the microfiber cloths, also included is the Mint Plus Automatic Floor Cleaner, a NorthStar Navigation Cube with two C batteries, power adapter, user manual, quick start guide, and a one year product warranty against a defective unit.
