Cold Steel Recon 1 27TLTH Review

Cold Steel Recon 1 27TLTH ReviewThe Cold Steel Knives Recon 1 is a large folding tactical/utility knife. It’s a very strong yet relatively light EDC (every day carry) knife, although many people will not want to be seen with it in public due to its size. It also makes a good backup or trail knife since it can be used in batoning. Mind you, not huge logs, just medium-sized logs, but it still packs a punch for a folding knife.

The Cold Steel Recon 1 knife measures 9-3/4 inches from base to tip (when extended) and comes with a 3.5-mm thick, 4-inch blade. Despite its large size, it weighs in at just 5.3 ounces. Although it’s a little bit heavy for a folder, just remember this: a) it’s a big knife b) it’s very strong and c) it used to weigh about 7 ounces (pre-2010). As such, Cold Steel has slimmed it down for added versatility.

The blade is constructed of AUS 8A carbon steel (carbon content about 0.75%) for toughness to resist chipping. It is easy to sharpen and takes a very nice edge. The blade comes in two shapes – American tanto blade or clip point blade. Both blade shapes come hollow ground and comes in either plain or partially serrated edges. Each blade also comes with a black teflon coating for durability (although it will wear out over time with frequent use). The Cold Steel Recon 1 27TLTH comes with an American tanto blade with partially serrated edges.

The Cold Steel Recon 1 handle is made up of two thick slabs of G10 with a linerless design. Although some may question the integrity or strength of this folding knife due to the lack of steel liners, it’s a very strong handle design and comes with a 6061 aluminum backspacer. Moreover, the backspacer, blade and handle are bolted together for added strength to ensure long-lasting use. For added security, there is a lanyard hole to tie paracord or ropes to belt or wrist.

It comes with deep double choil hence fits most hands like a glove. The handle is thick and the edges are rounded hence it offers excellent handling and comfort respectively. The roughly textured handle enables better grip in any conditions, wet or dry. However, there is no jimping on the thumb ramp to protect the thumb from accidents when using this knife.

Pocket Clip

The Cold Steel Recon 1 comes with two pocket clips hence both left-handed as well as right-handed users can carry this folding tactical/utility knife anywhere comfortably. However, the clips allow for tip up carry only and are also teflon-coated for durability thus they will also wear out over time with frequent use.

The Cold Steel Recon 1 deploys with a single thumb stud. Although the thumb stud is easily reversed by just using a screwdriver, it would be perfect if ambidextrous thumb studs are used instead. And since this folding tactical knife comes with a strong backspring, it takes quite a bit of effort to snap the blade out. It snaps out with an authoritative and loud crack to show that it means business.

The Cold Steel Recon 1 comes with a Tri-Ad Lock designed by Andrew Demko. It is the strongest lock out there. Its strength partly lies with the inclusion of a stop pin which re-distributes the vertical positive pressure (on the cutting edge) and transfer it to the handle frame and liners.

Final Thoughts

The Cold Steel Recon 1 knife is one heck of a beast. If you are looking for a cheap, durable folding tactical or utility knife, you can do no wrong with this high-quality survival knife. It is tough as a nail and always ready for any task.
